Fortnite Mobile isn’t as easy to get as it used to be, thanks to a long-running dispute with Google and Apple, but you can download it from the Epic Store if you don’t mind going off the road. It’s worth it. While Fortnite wasn’t the first major battle royale, it was the one that took the genre into the stratosphere, thanks to its bold, cartoonish aesthetic, fun weekly challenges, and perfectly balanced gameplay.
PUBG can rightfully claim to be the original Battle Royale game – the mod that became a runaway hit and spawned a whole new genre. It is not difficult to understand why. The mobile version of the game has been smartly optimized for smartphones, with lots of automated actions to keep you from getting shot while frantically swiping across your screen. It is also an impressive technical achievement.
Square Enix’s take on the Battle Royale genre throws a bunch of ideas from its classic RPG series into the mix. You have magic, you have monsters, you just have to kill the other teams. There are different roles to choose from, the game looks beautiful and gets new content regularly.
PUBG Mobile has just over 37 million reviews on the Google Play Store. That’s a lot, right? Garena Free Fire has 85.5 million. It was also the most downloaded game in the world in 2020. Its success is largely due to its popularity in Southeast Asia, India and Latin America, but this year Garena Free Fire also overtook PUBG Mobile in the United States, which means that if you haven’t played yet you are seriously behind the curve.
You might know Knives Out as a fabulously entertaining thriller from Rian Johnson, but it’s also a fabulously entertaining battle royale game from NetEase. Although it’s inspired by the gameplay of PUBG Mobile et al, Knives Out borrows its aesthetic from a Luc Besson film or the entertaining bonkers Thor: Ragnarok. Ongoing technical issues keep it near the top of the pile, but Knives Out is absolutely worth checking out.
A bloated version of PUBG with brighter graphics, a futuristic story and much more. The violence is equally tight and tense, and there are plenty of new twists for good measure. If you’re just beginning your battle royale adventure, this is hands down one of the best places to start.
NetEase’s Rules of Survival was released in 2017, shortly before PUBG Mobile made the transition to mobile. That’s why you won’t find much originality in this huge battle royale – it was created to fill a niche that effectively disappeared when PUBG Mobile was released. Don’t let that put you off trying, though. Rules of Survival is a slick shooter with vibrant visuals and an established playerbase.
Creative Destruction is to Fortnite what Rules of Survival is to PUBG – a niche-filling exercise from none other than NetEase, which has three games on this list. Released before Fortnite hit the Google Play Store, Creative Destruction is a 100-player battle royale that lets you destroy and create structures to alter your gaming environment to your advantage. It also looks a lot like Fortnite, which isn’t a bad thing.
