On Wednesday night, Rab arrested a Dhaka College student accused of attacking Nahid Mia who was beaten and axed to death during last month’s clash between students and traders in New Market.
The force also arrested two former Welcome Fast Food employees for their involvement in the clash.
Mahmudul Hasan Siyam, 21, a third-year student, is the sixth suspect to be arrested in connection with the murder of the delivery man.
Siyam was arrested in Shariatpur, Rab (Legal and Media) director Khandaker Al Moin told a press conference yesterday.
Fast food workers Mehedi Hasan Bappi, 21, and Moazzam Hossain Sajeeb, 23, were arrested in Cox’s Bazar, he said, adding that they cut their hair to fool cops and were looking for jobs in hotels in the seaside town.
Moin said in CCTV camera footage from April 19 that Siyam was seen hitting Nahid with an iron bar after the latter fell to the ground.
Law enforcement is also looking for Emon who was seen hacking the delivery man with a sharp weapon.
On the night of April 18, employees of Welcome Fast Food and Capital Fast Food in New Market got into a fight that eventually led to pitched battles the next day, leaving two people dead and many others injured.
The other person who died in the clash was Morsalin. Rab’s manager said yesterday that officers found no video of the incident and were trying to identify the killers.
Nahid was attacked outside the Nur Jahan supermarket. Video footage of the incident has gone viral on social media. Daily Star journalists present near the scene also took photos of the horrific attack.
Five files, including two for the murders, were subsequently filed.
In one of the cases, the police charged 24 people, mostly leaders of the BNP and its affiliated bodies.
In addition, more than 1,700 anonymous people have been charged in the five cases.
Detectives have previously arrested five Dhaka College students involved with the Bangladesh Chhatra League in connection with Nahid’s murder.
Responding to a question, the Rab’s director said officers were trying to identify those who attacked journalists and an ambulance transporting a patient.
