THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thrissur Rural Police on Wednesday arrested a 65-year-old man for assaulting the South Indian Bank branch manager who refused to grant him a Rs 3-lakh loan that had been granted by the previous manager .
The accused has been identified as Vijayaragavan from Kathirappilly, Ponjanam from Kattoor. He attacked SIB branch manager Rajesh, 43, from Kannur, with an iron bar as he arrived at his post, police said.
Kattoor CI, Sajeev MK, told TNIE that the accused fled the scene after the attack but was later arrested.
Earlier he reached the bank premises on a scooter and waited for the manager. When the latter reached the entrance, the accused approached him from behind and hit him on the head with the iron bar. The state of the bank agent would be stable after his hospitalization. Vijayaragavan, who was facing financial problems, had applied for a farm loan some time ago.
Although bank officials sanctioned the loan, he could not agree to the same due to Covid restrictions.
When he finally got to the bank, a new manager took over and asked him to produce other documents. Although he approached the bank with relevant documents a few times, the new manager told him that the loan cannot be sanctioned. The refusal angered him and he attacked the officer. He will be presented to the local court on Thursday, police said.
