LA Galaxy acquires winger Yony González on loan from SL Benfica
LOS ANGELES (Wednesday August 19, 2020) – LA Galaxy have acquired winger Yony González on loan from SL Benfica in Portugal’s top division using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), the club announced today. González, 26, joins the LA Galaxy for the remainder of the 2020 MLS season with professional experience in the top divisions of Colombia and Brazil throughout his career. He will occupy a place on the international list and will be added to the club list pending receipt of his P-1 visa and ITC.
“Yony is a dynamic playmaker who we think can strengthen our offense this year,” said LA Galaxy manager Dennis te Kloese. “He has a variety of skills and will be an important addition to our list. We look forward to welcoming Yony to Los Angeles and his contribution to our club this year.
The Medellín, Colombia product started his professional career with Colombian club Envigado Fútbol in 2013, where he remained before joining Atlético Junior in 2016. In 2018, the winger signed with Fluminense as part of the division high flight from Brazil. During his time in Brazil, González scored nine times while adding five assists in a season with the club between the Serie A competition and the Copa Sudamericana.
“We are delighted to add Yony to our squad and believe he can be a valuable player for us,” said Guillermo Barros Schelotto, head coach of LA Galaxy. “He’s a player who is in the prime of his career and has a lot of technical skills on the ball. We believe he will give our team a spark on the attacking side.
In 2020, González then signed with Portuguese club SL Benfica at the start of this season. Internationally, he has represented the Colombia U-23 team throughout his career.
The LA Galaxy continue their Major League Soccer season this week with a road game at Banc of California Stadium against LAFC on Saturday, August 22 at 3 p.m. PT live on FOX and FOX Deportes.
