Don’t surrender to pandemic control freaks – Reason.com
When, exactly, can we return to normal life? Is it when each person is vaccinated? Is when the locks finally demonstrate all effectiveness in the fight against COVID-19? When we drove all our kids crazy and our small businesses bankrupt with restrictions? When the disease is completely eradicated by the time the sun spits out? Or will it be when the pajama class finally gets bored of dominating the rest of society and decides it’s time to get some fresh air? This is a question that needs an answer as our Lords and Masters show all the provisions to tighten the screws once again to face a never-ending public health emergency.
A year and a half after the start of the pandemic, every American aged 12 and over who wishes to be vaccinated against COVID-19 has had the opportunity to be vaccinated. This is important because all available vaccines are extremely effective in reducing the dangers of infection to their recipients.
“All authorized COVID-19 vaccines have demonstrated high efficacy (≥89%) against COVID-19 severe enough to require hospitalization,” according to Current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control that includes reviewing the Delta variant that so many people are concerned about. “In clinical trials, no participant who received a COVID-19 vaccine died from COVID-19. “
That’s about as much insurance as you can ask for in a world that offers no guarantees of security. Epidemiologists have warned for months that COVID-19 is probably a permanent part of our lives, we must therefore learn to tolerate it as one risk among many others.
“The pandemic seems to be evolving into an endemic situation, which means that the virus could remain a constant presence”, Remarks a July news from the University of Medicine of South Carolina. “We have to figure out how to live with it, I think,” comments Dr Michael Sweat, a public health expert at the school.
So we can go on with our lives, can’t we? After all, we have a lot to dig into. Millions of children lost a year of education and struggled against mental health problems. Jobs and businesses have evaporated as the world has taken shelter in place, generally by command of the powers that be. And fundamental human freedom has taken a blow to the body which he may never recover from when the political class has taken advantage of public fear to expand their power, not only in traditionally authoritarian countries, but even in theoretically liberal countries.
“As COVID-19 has spread over the year, governments across the democratic spectrum have repeatedly resorted to excessive surveillance, discriminatory restrictions on freedoms such as movement and assembly, and the arbitrary or violent application of these restrictions by the police and non-state actors ” observed House of Liberty.
Worse yet, we have sacrificed our children’s freedom, prosperity and sanity for little reason.
“We find that shelter-in-place orders have had no detectable health benefits, only modest effects on behavior and small but negative effects on the economy,” according to to researchers at the University of Chicago.
This means that we should finally turn our backs on more than a year of authoritarian political failures. inspired by the draconian Chinese government crackdown and go on with your life, right?
Not so fast! The control freaks fueled by the pandemic are not yet done playing with us in the name of public health.
This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new moratorium on evictions that even Biden supporters Washington post editorial board called “almost certainly illegal“and even President Joe Biden concedes that he is”not likely to pass the constitutional rally. “But what a wonder efficient way drive small landlords in bankruptcy and force them to sell to big investors which are well positioned to thrive once tenants start paying rent again.
We are also witnessing the dreaded start of vaccine passports under a variety of names, as localities move to require proof of a shot like a authorization slip to enter bars, gyms and restaurants. This is an unnecessary gesture given that the vaccinated are already well protected against catching COVID, passing it on to others, or becoming seriously ill if they to do contracting it, so that the risk is borne primarily by those unvaccinated who have chosen to accept that risk. But what an opportunity to transform normal activities like buying lunch or going to the gym into privileges to be dispensed or refused at the will of the government!
But that comes after the to recover of hide mandates intended, it seems, to prevent vaccinated people who are already protected against the virus from passing it on to people who do not believe the virus is a threat and who have rejected the vaccination.
“We rely heavily on masking and distancing, that’s what we did when we didn’t have vaccines,” he added. points out Aaron E. Carroll, the director of health at Indiana University. “Hospitalizations and deaths are increasing in some areas, not because someone was not wearing a mask at the football game. They are happening because too many people are not immune.”
That said, Carroll keeps his membership card in check, as he advocates mandatory vaccination. It is a measure which, he concedes, would require “an enormous political capital to be implemented”, not to mention the use of violence to force people to fire blows which they do not want and which do not. are not needed to protect those who are protected because they already volunteer to be vaccinated. This policy could entail certain risks in itself.
Once again, vaccination is widely available in the United States and the unvaccinated have chosen this status. They made their own decisions and took responsibility for the resulting dangers, just like people who smoke, eat too much, ride motorcycles, or rock climb. In a free society, people have the right to do their own risk assessments, even if others don’t approve, and the rest of us should be able to live our lives without being limited because of the decisions made by others. .
COVID-19 has been an unpleasant ordeal for the entire planet, but perhaps not as terrible as the policies inflicted on us in the name of public health. It is time to move beyond the pandemic panic to rebuild our prosperity, raise our children and reclaim our freedom. If control freaks don’t like it, well, that’s another affliction we can live without.
